Tidewater Advisory works with family-owned businesses at the moment the founder starts handing over to the next generation. Lena Marsh and her small team sit with both generations, put the unspoken rules into words, and build a leadership plan everyone can sign. Clients come to Tidewater because the business is healthy but the handover feels risky, and they leave with a successor who is ready and a founder who can finally step back.

In one line

Tidewater helps family businesses agree on who leads next, and when, with both generations at the table.

How to use this Hub

III.Origin story

It started at her father's kitchen table

Lena grew up in her family's boatyard on the Chesapeake. When her father tried to hand it to her brother, nobody had ever written down how decisions were made, who the key customers trusted, or what “the Marsh way” actually meant. The handover took four years and nearly split the family.

After fifteen years in corporate HR, Lena founded Tidewater in 2017 to give other families the conversation hers never had. The name comes from the yard: the tide always turns, and the boats that come through it are the ones that were prepared.

The business was fine. It was the conversation nobody had that nearly sank us.
Vision

Every family business outlives its founder with its character intact.

Mission

We prepare both generations for the handover, so the business keeps its people, its customers and its name.

IV.Core values

Four things Tidewater won’t trade away

Written as decisions, not slogans. Hover or tap a card to see what each one looks like on a normal Tuesday.

01

Say the quiet part kindly

We name the issue everyone is avoiding, and we do it with care for the people in the room.

In practice →
In practice

The first session always includes the question nobody has asked out loud.

02

Both generations, every time

We never advise one side without the other. If only the founder wants us, we're not the right fit.

In practice →
In practice

No private calls that the other generation doesn’t know about.

03

Write it down

If it only lives in someone's head, it isn't a plan. Every engagement ends in documents the family keeps.

In practice →

Every meeting ends with a written summary within 48 hours.

04

Leave before we’re needed

Success is the family running it without us. We design every engagement with an end date.

V.Signature method

The Handover Table

Tidewater’s signature method. Every engagement sets four places at the table, and the handover only happens when all four are filled.

The Sage, with a Caregiver’s warmth

Tidewater leads with clear thinking and earned wisdom, and never forgets that every succession is also a family story. It explains; it doesn’t lecture.

VIII.Positioning

Why people choose Tidewater

For family-owned businesses facing a leadership handover, Tidewater Advisory is the succession partner that works with both generations at once, so the plan is one the whole family signs, not one imposed on them.

Both generations in the room

No side deals and no surprises; the plan has buy-in from day one.

Family and business together

Tidewater handles the relationships that accountants and lawyers can’t.

A fixed end date

Engagements finish in 6 to 9 months with written handover documents.

Competitive frame: Succession planning from accounting and law firms (technical, one-sided) and executive coaches (one person, no business plan).

IX.Client transformation

From “someday” to a date on the calendar

Drag the handle to move from before to after.

Before

  • The handover has been “a few years away” for a decade
  • Founder and successor avoid the topic at dinner
  • Key customers only trust the founder
  • The team doesn’t know who really decides

After

  • A signed handover date and a written leadership plan
  • Both generations describe the future the same way
  • Key relationships introduced and transferred
  • The founder steps back into a role they chose
