Tidewater Advisory works with family-owned businesses at the moment the founder starts handing over to the next generation. Lena Marsh and her small team sit with both generations, put the unspoken rules into words, and build a leadership plan everyone can sign. Clients come to Tidewater because the business is healthy but the handover feels risky, and they leave with a successor who is ready and a founder who can finally step back.
Tidewater helps family businesses agree on who leads next, and when, with both generations at the table.
Every name this Hub mentions, so anyone joining the account knows who decides, who delivers and who to ask.

Leads every engagement. Fifteen years in corporate HR before Tidewater; grew up in the family boatyard.

Runs family councils and the agreements that come out of them. Former family-office counsel.

Keeps the calendar, the documents and the families on track between sessions.
Lena grew up in her family's boatyard on the Chesapeake. When her father tried to hand it to her brother, nobody had ever written down how decisions were made, who the key customers trusted, or what “the Marsh way” actually meant. The handover took four years and nearly split the family.
After fifteen years in corporate HR, Lena founded Tidewater in 2017 to give other families the conversation hers never had. The name comes from the yard: the tide always turns, and the boats that come through it are the ones that were prepared.

The business was fine. It was the conversation nobody had that nearly sank us.
Every family business outlives its founder with its character intact.
We prepare both generations for the handover, so the business keeps its people, its customers and its name.
Written as decisions, not slogans. Hover or tap a card to see what each one looks like on a normal Tuesday.
We name the issue everyone is avoiding, and we do it with care for the people in the room.
In practice →The first session always includes the question nobody has asked out loud.
We never advise one side without the other. If only the founder wants us, we're not the right fit.
In practice →No private calls that the other generation doesn’t know about.
If it only lives in someone's head, it isn't a plan. Every engagement ends in documents the family keeps.
In practice →Every meeting ends with a written summary within 48 hours.
Success is the family running it without us. We design every engagement with an end date.
In practice →The end date goes in the proposal, not the final invoice.
Tidewater’s signature method. Every engagement sets four places at the table, and the handover only happens when all four are filled.
Tidewater leads with clear thinking and earned wisdom, and never forgets that every succession is also a family story. It explains; it doesn’t lecture.
Hover the wheel to explore all twelve archetypes. For creative alignment only; archetypes guide how the brand behaves and never appear in public copy.
Each one is anchored to real customers. Open a card for the full profile; the complete versions live in the Library.

Business card

Every founder I’ve worked with says the same thing: “I’ll step back when I’m sure.” Here’s the problem. Sure never comes on its own. It comes from a date both generations agree on.

# Tidewater Advisory: AI writing brief Who we are: succession advisors for family-owned businesses. We work with both generations at once. Audience: founders (60s) stepping back, successors (30s–40s) stepping up, and the accountants who refer them. Voice: a calm advisor at the end of a long table. Plain, warm, direct. Short sentences. Real examples. Always: name both generations; be specific about dates, roles and documents; say the hard thing kindly. Never: hype, fear tactics, "legacy journey", "synergy", "exit strategy", "unlock". Signature method: The Handover Table (Founder's Story, Successor's Mandate, Family Agreement, Handover Calendar).
